The Beast of Durham has struck !

Beast Sun 5th Sept 10 029Yes is was offically run this year, The Beast of Durham, a 50 mile route around the hills & valleys of Co Durham. Riders set off at 9.00am from Sniperley Park & Ride to take on the challenge. Not sure what most riders were expecting but I think some should have worn walking boots to get themselves up the hills ! There was a strongish headwind most of the way back in to just to sap the last of your energy. Everyone got a shirt at the end and a map before they set off, just as well because they needed it in quite a few places 🙂 A few pics of the event http://picasaweb.google.com/scotbrown1/TheDurhamBeast

Rd 3 was like an F1 Race !

Rd 3 Meadowfield 069Yes as expected the riders were flying around the course with dust coming up from under their wheels. Cracking Swaledale rocks & poo

Rd 3 Swaledale 236Nutcracker Rd 4 in the big hills of Swaledale,  finished off many a good man. The course was set on moor farmland / old quarry with a very testing course which was made more testing by a very strong wind. It challeneged all of riders abilities but the sun made the day with perfect clear views over the dales. The event village was in the best location yet with good views of the first big climb and the loop around the start / finish area. What a great days racing for all ages and spectators alike. Selkirk DONE

31st July & 1st Aug 2010 037What a fantastic weekend of cycling. The Rugby Ground was open from Friday and there was still quite a few left on the Monday still. The Road Sportif followed the same route as last year with plenty big hills and some fantastic descending on the Saturday. The MTB Marathon followed on the Sunday with over 1200 riders taking on the 4 courses. Great weekend of weather but poured down late on the Sunday night so ended up in the bar talking to Nick Craig who was on his holidays with his family and had been crusing around the 7 Staines. Oh and he was first in the 100K and his oldest son got 4th on the 28K. Well done to all the NE riders both on the Sat & Sun. John and his merry crew set up a great weekend of cycling, bring on next year

Blew away @ Grassington

First time the Marathon series has hit the Yorkshire Dales and base camp was 4th July 2010 Mtb Marathon 022at Kilnsey, a small village just outside Grassington with a pub less than 5mins walk away! There was 4 different routes on offer all starting at 10.00am and heading off up the first hill of the day, followed by a short downhill then up another bigish climb over the moors. The descent from that down the road again was fantastic and very quick, alittle too quick for some ! from their riders split up depending upon what distance they were doing. The event was very well marshalled & sign posted, T shirt isnt too bad either! not to mention the goodie bags!

4th July 2010 Mtb Marathon 031As for the weather what a weekend of two halfs with the Saturday hot & sunny with a strongish wind upto early evening then on the Sunday dry to start with a gentle breeze but come dinnertime it was pouring down and you could hardly stand up.

Some photos are here http://picasaweb.google.com/scotbrown1/CRCMTBMartahonGrassington was intending to take many more action shots on the fells but by the time we got back and changed it was too wet & windy to head into the hills again, sorry.

The next round is at Selkirk with the Road Sportives on the Sat 31st July and MTB Marathons on the Sun 1st Aug, all the info here http://www.mtb-marathon.co.uk/events/selkirk.php (probably the best one, I only say that because I enjoy the weekend of riding up there every year!)

York Cycle Show Report & Photos

York Cycle Show 094What a weekend of two halfs. On the Saturday you could just about stand up for the wind blowing across the race course and heavy showers but come Sunday it was red hot and no wind.
